Do not
merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it
says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says
is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking
at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
James 1:22-24
Today I am
piggybacking on something Nate spoke to in an encouragement last
week.
In previous
encouragements I have talked a bit about the hard work of
memorizing lines when one has a substantial part in a play. Those
of you who know me well or well enough know that I have a degree in
theatre and both acted and directed non-equity (fancy way of saying
that I did not get paid) theatre in Chicago for a number of years.
Committing words to memory and being able to then spew them
out while portraying a character is certainly a feat to be proud
of.
However, it
is only part of the process. Memorizing two, three or
four hundred lines is one thing. Having an audience suspend its
disbelief for two hours or so and believe that you are Hamlet or
Stanley Kowalski or someone you absolutely are not in your day to
day life is something entirely different. This also applies to
scripture. At times I have been overwhelmed and felt inferior in
front of fellow Christians who pull memorized scripture out of
their mouths like a storefront magician pulls colored scarves from
a hat (or wherever you pull colored scarves from). It can look easy
and amazing. How does he remember that? How can he remember James
1:22-24 from memory? Why don't I have scripture
memorized?
Memorization
is step one. As the scripture suggests, are you doing what it says.
You may know scripture. Are you living it? Is Jesus living through
you?
